Yes, having the AI opponents driving cars from the same era just feels right. And there are enough vintage mod cars for NFS4 to create lineups for almost all classes for the 1950s to the 1980s.
The 3rd generation Ford Capri was introduced in '78, I think, so it just falls in the 1970s category. And it being the fastest model (2.8i), means it fits into my "A" class.
But I agree a first-gen model would have been nice to have. (edit: I just looked it up and the 2.8i was introduced in 1981 - don't tell anyone )
