Actually, my cpu is hardly a monster: an AMD Athlon X5000 @ 2.6 ghz from a few years ago. It's just fast enough to handle Shift2 and actually a bit too slow for HP2010.
(I'm planning to upgrade to an Intel Sandy Bridge very soon)
Having a good video card is more important for modern games though. My current Radeon 5770 is considered medium level these days, but still seems to be able to handle things well at the resolutions I'm playing in.

I just bought this car for fun once I had earned enough money in my S2 career. It looks great, but is -as expected- a bit of a handful to drive.
